Iran Joins Islamic Inter-Parliamentary Union Meeting in Abu Dhabi

Ali Ardeshi Larijani Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani will leave Tehran for Abu Dhabi Tuesday to attend Islamic Inter-Parliamentary Union (IIPU) meeting.

Tehran had previously announcement that it would not attend the session because Iranian officials said it was “illegal.” Rapporteur of Iranian Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Kazem Jalali has already said that Iran would not join the meeting.

A member of Iranian Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Mahmoud Ahmadi-Biqash told ISNA that Iran has agreed to participate in the meeting after the UAE promised not to discuss tense issues.

Iranian media say the United Arab Emirates had originally called the meeting to solve border disputes among Islamic states. Fars news agency says Iran did not want to discuss three disputed Iranian islands and refused to attend.

The media reports say Tehran agreed to attend after the UAE said it would not discuss the border dispute issue. Attendees are expected to discuss the situations in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories. (voa/isna | Photo: Third World Conference of Speakers of Parliament)
