Google baru-baru ini memperkenalkan laptop berbasis Chrome OS pada konferensi developer Google I/O di San Francisco, Amerika Serikat. Laptop produksi Acer Inc. dan Samsung Electronics Co. mulai dipasarkan di AS pada 15 Juni 2011 melalui jaringan Best Buy dan Amazon. Google Chrome OS sebelumnya telah diuji pada laptop Cr-48.
Laptop Samsung bersistem operasi Chrome memiliki layar 12,1 inci, Wi-Fi, dan opsi untuk layanan 3G Verizon. Laptop versi Wi-Fi only dihargai US$429, sementara versi 3G berharga US$499. Sedangkan laptop Acer dengan layar 11,6 inci dan Wi-Fi dijual dengan harga US$349 ke atas. Oleh Google laptop berbasis Chrome OS itu dinamakan Chromebooks.
Dengan Chrome OS yang dirilis dengan lisensi open-source, waktu booting laptop jauh lebih cepat dengan daya tahan baterai lebih lama. Aplikasi atau program ter-update secara otomatis lewat layanan cloud tanpa harus mendownload terlebih dahulu ke mesin lokal.
